Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a compund used primarily as chelating agent. It has a particular affinity to attach ions that have a +2 charge, such as Lead (Pb++), Zinc (Zn++), Copper (Cu++), etc. It is used therapeutically to bind with heavy metals and other substances to allow such to be subsequently excreted by the body.
It can be used, in order of decreasing effectiveness, intravenously, via suppository and orally.
