- Average Intake (in US): 3 - 4 mg./day
Supplement Forms:
- Never found in supplement form
Food Sources:
- Canned foods, especially:
Tomato juice in unlacquered can
Orange juice in unlacquered can
Pineapple juice in unlacquered can
Signs and Symptoms of Deficiency:
- Stunted growth and anemia in animal studies
Causes of Deficiency:
- Due to limited data, causes of tin deficiency are unknown
Adverse Reactions and Toxicity:
- Oral tin has very low toxicity
- Organo - tin compounds are more toxic due to more efficient
absorption
- Tin accumulates progressively throughout life
Drug/Nutrient Interaction:
- >50 mg./day can have negative effect on zinc
Biochemical Functions:
- Due to limited data, biochemical functions of tin are
unknown
- May be involved in the electron transport systems and protein
binding
